The national symbol of Belize of officialy approved in 1981 the day the country officially became independent. The flag consisted of the coat of arms on a blue field and red stripes on the top and on the bottom.
The country odtained its coat of arms in 1908, this time the country had an official mame British Honduras. The national coat of arms was formed on the basis of British ensigns. At the hoist of the flag there as a Union Jack that tyraditionally meant the British protection of the country. The field was lue with a natonal emblem on the white disk. In the lower part of the coat of arms a national motto that can be translated in Engish as “ Under the shade I flourish” was written.
The design of the national flag
The field of the flag is royal blue, in the center there is a white disk with a national coat of arms. Red stripes were added on the flag in 1981 when the country officially became independent. Tis colour was the officia symbol of opposite party. A man of African decsend was depicted on the natioal coat of arms. Belize became the only country using humain pictures an element of the national symbols. After the country gained independence the national contest was held to chose the design of the national flag.
