Flag Of Dominican Republic

The flag of the Dominican Republic is a national symbol of the state. It has the traditional shape of a rectangle, divided into four parts by the white cross in the center. The left top and right bottom are blue, and the right top and left bottom are red. There is an emblem of the country inside the cross

The history

Dominican Republic was founded in 1844. The national flag was adopted I 1856 and has slightly canged since then. Before the country was a Spanish colony and the first flag appeated together with the national movement for independence. The first design consisted of the fielf with three horizontal red stripes. Later the coat of arms as added on the national symbol.

The symbolic meaning

On the one hand, the red-blue background of the flag was adopted in the Republic of Haiti, on the other, these colors have their own significance for the Dominicans. Blue is the freedom of the state, and red is the blood shed for its achievement, the fire of the struggle for the liberation of the people. Unlike Haiti, whose flag has two horizontal stripes (blue and red), these colors are staggered in the Dominican flag. This change had no symbolic meaning, it was made to distinguish the flags of the two republics. The white cross means the willingness of Dominicans to sacrifice themselves, their religiosity and strength, the ability to defend their freedom, but at the same time the desire to live in peace and the denial of the need for war.
