The flag of El Salvador has a typical design for the countries from central America. It represents a triband with blue white and blue horizontal stripes and a coat of arms printed in the center.
Each color used in the flag has symbolic meaning. Blue represents the sky and massive ocean situated on the continent. White color is a symbol of peace and solidarity with the world. Golden amber reflects the national spirit. The coat of arms features a triangle solar rays and a moto of the country written at the bottom: God, Union, Liberty.
Before 1912 the design of the flag was different. It was depicted on the cobalt blue field and had a red canton with a national coat of arms in the left upper part. The similar design was used since 1865 but inside a red canton instead of the national coat of arms there were white stars. Cobalt blue tone was always used in national symbols of the country as well as in many other countries of Central America.
