The national colors of Guatemala used in the national flag are similar to those in the national symbol of Argentina: sky blue and white. It is a vertical tricolor with two blue bands and a white one in the center. It is a symbol of geographic location of the country that means that the country is situated between two oceans: Pacific and Atlantic ocean. Also blue is like in many other flags a symbol of the sky over the country. White band is a symbol of clear intentions and peaceful thoughts.
Till 1851 there was no need for a distinct national flag on the territory on the day –to- day Guatemala. This year Spain took control over the territory and Spanish colors were added on the flag. In 1871 the initial flag was restored but bands were made vertical to distinguish it from other flags. To avoid mixing up of the national flag from other flag a national coat of arms was imprinted. In addition to tis flag a new one so-called public was adopted. It consists of four triangles each of the represent four local tribes from which local inhabitants grew up.
