The national flag of Guinea Bissau was adopted in 1973 soon after independence from Portugal was proclaimed. It is based like many other African national symbols on the flag of the international movement for independence. The flag consists of two horizontal bands yellow and green and a vertical red on the left. On the red vertical band there is a black star. Black color is a symbol of unity of Africa. Red stands for the blood national patriots shed for their independence. Yellow band is a symbol of the sun shining brightly on the continent. Green is a symbol of the national hope for the better life on the continent. Like many other countries of the continent people designing the flag were inspired by the flag of Ghana. This flag have the same meaning and also they symbolize the country`s loyalty to the national movement for the liberation of the continent from French and British colonial dependence.
