The official flag of Kiribati is a red field with a frigate bird flying over the rising sun. In the lower part, there are three wavy stripes on a blue field. These stripes represent blue background with three group of islands the country consists of. The frigate bird is a symbol of the country control over the natural forces. The sun is a symbol of the country geographic situation towards the equator.
Independence from British rule was granted to the territory in 1979. Soon after a contest was announced to choose the design of a national flag. A design based on the military coat of arms was submitted but in the college of arms, the decision was taken to modify the coat of arms. The sun and a frigate bird were enlarged to occupy more space and blue and white stripes became narrower. However local people insisted on the original design and a new flag was adopted after the celebrations of independence in the capital of the country was confirmed.
