The flag of Laos consists of three stripes: two red ones at the top and at the bottom and a blue one in the center. In the center of a blue band there is a white disc. This flag was adopted in 1945 and now it is the second communist flag after Cuba. It is the only flag of the communist country which doesn`t use a five pointed star in its emblem.
The national flag of the country was changed several times in coincidence with historical and political changes in the country. From 1952 till 1975 this state was a royal monarchy. The flag was a red field with a white elephant on a pedestal under the parasol. The elephant symbolized the ancient name of the country which was called a land of million elephants. Elephant is a symbol of a royal monarchic family and the pedestal stands for the law the country lives on. In times when country was a French colony a French tricolor was added at the left corner of the flag.
