The current flag of Lesotho was adopted in 2006 40 years after the country gained independence from France. It is tricolor with blue, white and green stripe. In the center on a white stripe there is an emblem with a national hat. This flag was designed to symbolize a peaceful, unified and a loyal to their neighbor country. Colors of the tricolor are chosen to reflect the national core values. Blue represents the sky or rain. Green is a symbol of the country`s prospering and natural resources the country is rich in. White represents peace and clear intentions of the local citizens. It is a part of national ideology which is in force since the country was a constitutional monarchy.
The current flag was chosen in 2006 from four proposed variants. On each of the an emblem with a national hat was used. At first the hat was brown but after it was replaced into black one in order to remind everybody that Lesotho is a black nation.
