Before it became independent from Great Britain Malawi was called a Nyasa land. The country was renamed Malawi and it happened in 1964.
The first flag was adopted in 1964. On the national symbol of the country there is a rising run and it is used as a symbol of free continent. It symbolizes that this time Africa was gaining independence from the rule of European colonizers. The sun has 31 rays it stands for a fact that Malawi was 31 country of the continent to become independent. In 2010 this flag was readopted. It was proposed by Democratic party. But red rising sun was replaced by a full white sun to symbolize the economic progress of the country since it became independent.
The flag uses a traditional colors for Pan African movement. Black stands for the local people of the continent. Red is a symbol of blood shed by local patriots for independence of the country. Green means nature resources the country is rich in and agriculture being the the basis of the economics of the country.
