The national flag of Mali is a tricolor consists of three vertical bands. From the hoist this flag is colored green, yellow and red. Colors of the flag are traditional for the members of Pan African movements.
These colors are traditional for African countries and all have symbolic meaning. Green stand for the country`s rich natural resources. Red is a symbol of the blood of local patriots shed in their struggle for independence. Gold is a symbol of purety and richness of mineral resources.
Independence from France was gained in 1961. The original flag was adopted in 1959 when a country entered Mali Federation. The first flag had nearly the same color shape except of the fact it had and emblem of a human figure with hands to the sky. Later it was removed from the flag as 90% of the population were muslims and in their religion human symbols are prohibited.
