Green band is the widest part of Mauritanian flag. Green is the most commonly used color in Mauritanian country. On the top and on the bottom there are red boarders. On the center there is an emblem with a gold crescent and a five pointed star.
Each flag of the country has its symbolic meaning. Green color is often used in Islamic countries as a symbol of their religion. A crescent is used like a symbol of moon reminding about moon calendar being a basis of the country`s life. Gold color is the symbol of desert. History for independence
After the company gained independence the first variants of flag appeared. Before that this territory was a French colony so there was no need for its own symbol. But when a company became independent a national contest was declared to chose the design. For local citizens the flag became the symbol of the victory in the fight for independence.
