The flag of Mozambique was adopted in 1983. It represents a field with three horizontal bands: green, black and yellow. At the left hoist of the flag there is a red triangle. This flag is one of three national symbols depicting a fire arm. This flag includes an emblem of AK 47 attached to the barrel. Except this flag there are only three national flags: Guatemala, Haiti and Mozambique.
Green in heraldic is a traditional symbol of richness of nature. Black is a traditional symbol of African continent. Red stands for the national symbol of independence. On the emblem there is an open book which symbolizes importance of the education in the country.
The flag is based on the official symbol of the national liberation front. It was used during a short period of time soon after the country gained independence from Portugal. It looked like a present flag but without an emblem at the hoist. In 1983 the flag was slightly changed. Stripes were maid horizontal and a star symbolizing Marxism was added to the flag. In 2005 a national contest was organized was held to chose a new flag but it remained the same.
