This flag was officially adopted in 1990 after the country gained independence from South Africa. Soon after that a national contest to chose the design of the national symbol. 870 variants were received and only six of them were included in the short list.
The flag has a diagonal band diagonal from the lower hoist side corner. The upper triangle of the flag is blue and there is a gold sun with 12 triangular rays and a lower green triangle.
The colors of the national flag were not chosen accidentally. Red color represents the most valuable resource of the country: its people It reflects their readiness to work hard to build a land of equal opportunities for everybody. White is a symbol of peace and unity. Green is a symbol of vegetation, rich nature of the country and the agriculture the country is highly dependent on. Blue is a color representing clear Namibian sky and the Atlantic ocean. Also it is a symbol of rain as a precious natural resource.
