The flag of Nauru was for the first time raised after the country became independent. It happened after the independence day on January 1968. The design of the flag depicts the country geographic position, In the center of the flag on a blue field, there is a gold stripe representing equator in the center of the Pacific Ocean. At the lower part of the flag, there is a 12 pointed star. Each of 12 rays represents one of 12 tribes of the country. The separation of the flag into two boulders signify that the first inhabitants of the country were brought from two boulders. The color of the star is white and it is a symbol of phosphate one of the most precious natural resources.
The flag was designed by an Australian flag maker Evans. Unlike many other flags of the Pacific region, it evoked lots of controversies.
