The national flag of Niger is adopted in 1958 a year before a country became independent from France. It is a tricolor with orange, white and green colors. In the center of the flag there is orange sun.
Colors of this flag are not traditional. Upper band signifies region of Sahara desert. White band means purity but some people think that this band is connected to the river Niger. Green band represents both hopes of local people for the better future. An orange sun in the center is a symbol of independence or a rising sun. Tricolor is a symbol of former dependence upon France. Before 1958 there was no need for the national flag. Locals prohibited the country to have national symbols as they were afraid it will cause national movement for independence. But following the liberation movement the local authorities were obliged to give the country independence.
