The adoption of the modern flag dates back to times Peter I ruled the country. Before flags were used primarily during battles and were similar to coat of arms od governing dynasties. Peter the First was fond of ship construction and while sailing he noticed that flags on Dutch and German ships were different from those used in Russia. Further he flew tricolor we are used to with a national coat of arms.
There are different meanings of this flag. Some people think that they come from national traditions and are similar to colors of national clothes. There is another variant that red is a symbol of empire, blue symbolizes a divine force and mother of the God. And white is a liberty of all citizens. There is another version according to which there is three colors of the national flag symbolize the unity of power, people and Christian religion.
The day of the national flag
In Russia there is even a special day of the national flag. It is celebrated 22 of august every day because that day tricolor replaced red flag of the Soviet period.
