The first flag of Samoa was for the first time adopted in 1949 for trust worth ships of the country. The field is red with a blue canton at the hoist. At the canton, there are southern cross circled stars.
Before this territory was a flag of the German Empire. That time a colonial flag was used red white and black tricolor with an eagle in the center. In 1919 the territory of German Samoa was occupied by New Zealand and gained control. From 1914 till 1920 there was a control over this territory and this time there was no need for national symbol because the flag of New Zealand was used. There were other proposals for this flag with three palm trees but this variant was never adopted. But they all were rejected as it was commonly believed that the original flag was better as the national symbol. People from this African country respect blood of local patriots shed for independence and a better life. They treat national flag as a part of the country`s heroic past and a symbol of the future they want to be prosperous.
