The flag of Sao Tom and principle has been adopted in 1975. According to the constitution of 1990 it is described in the following way. It is a tricolor consisting of green bands at the top and at the bottom and yellow in the center. On yellow field there are two five pointed stars. At the left hoist of the flag there is a red triangle.
Red triangle is a symbol of the country. Two black stars are symbol of that the company belongs to African continent and it also symbolizes two largest Islands of the country. Yellow band is the symbol of te country`s richness in natural resources. Green bands symbolize water and agricultural richness.
Before this country became independent it was a Portuguese colony. There was no need for particular symbols of the country because a Portuguese flag was used and powers were afraid that the adoption of own flag may raise national movements for independence. But in 1972 powers were obliged to give the country autonomy and the necessity for the national flag became evident.
