The flag of Singapore was a British colony till 1942 so a union Jack with a Singapore national emblem was used as a national symbol. During the Second world war the territory was occupied and a Japanese symbol was used as a national Symbol.
The current flag of Singapore is a field divided into two parts. The top field is red and the lower is white. In the left part of the flag there are five pointed stars and a crescent.
Red is a symbol of hope and courage. White is about peace, freedom and hope. The crescent on the flag is a symbol of young growing nation and muslim population of the country. Some people think that five stars on the flag represent five core values of the country: democracy, justice, peace, liberty and equity. Some other people think that a crescent and stars symbolize miltucultural richness of the country and diversity of cultural groups living on the territory of the country.
