The national flag of Solomon islands represents a thin yellow stripe dividing diagonally the flag into two equal triangles. The top one is blue and contains five white stars, the lower is green.
Colors of the flag have politic, religious and cultural meaning. Blue is a symbol of water in the form of rain, rivers of the country and the Pacific Ocean and their meaning for the country. Green symbolizes the land with plants growing on it. Yellow is the sun dividing the land and the ocean. Five stars are arranged in the form of the letter “X”.
Before 1975 the territory of the country was under British protectorate. After the territory got independence, a national contest was held to chose a design for a new flag. There were several variants some of them had a national coat of arms on it but the winning design had a circle of stars.
