The flag is a rectangular field consisting of back, red and green divided by white stripes. On the left there is a blue triangle with a golden star.
All colors used on the flag have a symbolic meaning. Black is a symbol of black people of South Sudan. White is a symbol of peace for which local people live. Red is a symbol of blood shed by patriots for their independence. Green is an agricultural potential of the country rich in natural resources. Blue is a symbol of the river Nile. This flag has not always been used as the national symbol. Before it was adopted as a national symbol it was used as a military coat of arms.
