The flag of Tongo consists of a red field with a white canton with the red cross imprinted on it. This flag remains unchanged since 1875 and it is confirmed in the constitution that this flag is the only symbol of the state. Before the Republic of Tongo was adopted it has been the symbol of the Kingdom of Tongo.
Colors of the national flag carry politic, religious and cultural meaning being a reflection of the key values of the country. Red is a symbol of Christianity as 97% of the state population practice this religion. White is the symbol of purity of local citizens. Red also is a symbol of blood Jesus Christ shed for humanity.
The history of this territory is long. First British arrived there at the late 18th century. In 1777 James Cook with his team made three visits. Approximately fifty years later British missioners arrived and started turning the local population into the Christian religion. The first Tonga flag was adopted by the King in 1840 and consisted of a letter of the King`s initials on the field.
