The flag of Mississippi – the symbol of one of 50 US states.
The flag of Mississippi consists of three horizontal bars in red, white and blue colors, and a Confederate battle flag placed in the upper left corner. There are a red field and diagonal blue lines inside the Confederate emblem. Thirteen white stars placed inside the lines, symbolize the first thirteen states of the USA.
The current flag of Mississippi was adopted in 1894. Before this year the state had an unofficial flag that was developed and authorized by Confederates during the civil war in 1860. In 2001 the proposal to remove the Confederate battle flag was defeated by the Mississippi inhabitants. Nowadays there are a lot of claims remain to remove Confederate flag. Thus, some institutions such as schools, the University of Mississippi, Mississippi State University and others stopped using Confederate emblem as a part of their flag. Mississippi is the only state which has a Confederate battle flag as one of its state symbols.
