The flag of Rhode Island – the symbol of one of 50 states of the USA.
The main color of the flag is white. A gold anchor is placed in the center of the flag. The state motto, “Hope” is placed inside a blue ribbon. The word “Hope” could probably be a reference to the Biblical phrase, “hope we have as an anchor of the soul.” The anchor and the motto are situated in a circle of thirteen golden stars symbolizing the first states becoming a part of the USA.
Although the former colony of Rhode Island was one of the first thirteen states joined the USA, it took the state many years to adopt the flag. Thus, the flag was officially adopted by the General Assembly only during the June Session in 1897.
However, before the official adoption of the current design, there was a flag adopted for general use on March 30, 1877. It was white with a blue anchor inside of the circle composed of the blue stars. At the top of the red frame surrounding the anchor, the word “Hope” was written.
